For the last several years, I've been working on a project that's very close to my heart. A video game! More specifically, an RPG adventure that hearkens to the golden age of NES RPGs of the late 80s and early 90s with painstakingly faithful 8 bit graphics and music. As of writing, there's essentially no game, but I do have a full original soundtrack with forty-something tracks, a rich, engaging story full of interesting characters, and even a handful of graphics! Allow me to introduce you to...
Towards the end of the Medieval period, a race of peaceful humanoid slimes lived in their own village on earth. Hard workers by nature, they were trusted allies of the humans living in a nearby bustling castle town. The slimes led very long lives, and thanks to protection from the humans, they were able to live out those long lives free of worry.
Then one day, they were gone. Tragically, history did not remember the slimes, so it's impossible to know exactly what could have driven them from existence. No trace of slime civilization still exists...
...except one.
In the year 1990, a single slime, curiously resembling a suit of armor, remains, along with a slime dog, known as a jelly. Both of them only being babies at the time of their peoples' disappearance, all they know is that they possess the genetic desire to work. For the last several hundred years, they have wandered the earth together, looking for whatever odd jobs they could find. However, one fateful stint at a particular establishment may give our gooey heroes more than they bargained for...
Whose Burger, a fast food joint in a state of gnarly disrepair thanks to the (lack of) efforts of one Mr. Boler, employs the slime. Not long after, health inspector Ari DeLune shows up, and Boler is told he has to clean up his act, or else. Pleading for mercy, the balding Boler sends the slime to whip up something special to impress DeLune; hopefully enough for her to go a little easier on the nasty little burger shop. However, as our hero is gathering ingredients, a strange, freezing-cold portal is uncovered, sucking the slime-jelly duo into the ice world of Frizidia! In this strange new world, the pacifist slime must use newfound cooking skills to stay alive! The slime must obey Boler's orders to cook up the perfect burger for their "guest", but on top of that, our heroes of blue and red must find their way home.
The last of an otherwise extinct race, this blue humanoid slime wanders the earth in search of work, not for money, but to satisfy the genetic need present in all slimes to keep busy. The player controls this character for most of the game. Don't let looks decieve you, it's not really a knight. The player chooses this character's name, the default being Knight.
This adorable little ball of red goo is part dog, but it's also part slime, so it's supposed to be a hard worker just like its owner, but several hundred years of being pampered makes for a lazy mutt. However, as soon as something piques its interest, it's practically unstoppable! It's just like a real puppy! The player chooses this character's name, the default being Gel.
This portly man is the boss over at Whose Burger, and he's made a real mess of the place. He's got as little respect for his employees as he has hair, which is a shame, since the only person in his employ is the slime knight. Boler wouldn't know happiness if it bit him in his burger buns, and even gives his childhood best friend Ari the cold shoulder, despite her best efforts.
A happy-go-lucky woman, Ari is a health inspector sent out to check on the Whose Burger restaurant operated by Mr. Boler. As it turns out, the two were childhood chums who lost touch when Ari's family moved away. Though she arrives at Boler's store on business, that starts to take a back seat to her new objective: finding out what happened to make Boler into such a bitter adult, when last they met he was such a sweet young boy.
This strange being is met by our heroes shortly after their arrival in Frizidia. It reveals that seven mystical hamburger ingredients are hiding all across the land and vows to protect them. The only thing that stands between it and this goal is... mobility. Nan-Tsu can't move an inch, unless someone or something else, such as, say, a mischevious gooey red dog, were to give it a push.
The soundtrack currently has over 40 songs, all made in Famitracker, meaning they're faithful to the NES hardware. A sample of nearly 20 tracks is available on my Bandcamp page—and embedded right here!
