TruKuu and I were chillin' at his place, as often we do. He had recently bought a box (or several boxes if I recall correctly) of VHS tapes containing TV taped off the air. As it turned out, a lot of them contained old cartoons, mostly Looney Tunes. So, we were casually watching the tapes, and I was in the kitchen doing something or other. TruKuu started walking towards me to tell me something, but then he stopped in his tracks. "Wait..." An episode of Looney Tunes had just started, and TruKuu looked back to the TV as he realized,
"This is the Big Chungus episode."
For those who don't know, Big Chungus is the name of a still of Bugs Bunny from the 1941 cartoon "Wabbit Twouble". The still shows Bugs mimicking the size and shape of Elmer Fudd, who is an unusually fat man in the cartoon. The image was first widely circulated around message boards with the caption "Bugs... easy on the carrots", referring to his weight. The name "Big Chungus" comes from the same image being pasted onto a PlayStation 4 game case with the title, you guessed it, Big Chungus.
The humor simply comes from the nonsense factor of it all. In other words, in case you don't get it, there's nothing to get. It's just a goofy name on a silly picture of Bugs Bunny; nothing more, nothing less. See, I have this strange tendency when it comes to humor sometimes. The less funny I actually think something is, the more I pretend to think it's funny, which inevitably leads to me at least somewhat genuinely enjoying it. Big Chungus is sort of that way. It's goofy enough on the surface, but it was spammed around to an unbearable degree in certain online spaces. It usually isn't too long after I get completely sick of a meme that it becomes one of my all-time favorites.
Once TruKuu realized that this was the fabled episode, we immediately dropped anything else we were doing and our full focus was on the screen. TruKuu sat on the couch and I stood behind it. As the cartoon progressed, I started noticing elements I found familiar. Before long, Fudd nailed down some boards over Bugs's rabbit hole. "Dat'll hold 'im awright! Eheheheheheh!" I was already laughing so hard that I could barely keep my eyes open. The fact that I was laughing so hard at something so stupid only made me laugh harder. Tears began streaming down my face. My laughter was practically screaming. Bugs opened the boards as if they were a trapdoor and climbed out of his hole. His body changed shape to match Fudd's. "Dat'll hold 'im awright! Eheheheheheh!" I could have fainted. The fact that it wasn't that funny made it a hundred times funnier to me. As for TruKuu's reaction, I remember him laughing pretty hard as well. I'm not sure if he was screaming quite the way I was though. Seeing fat Bugs Bunny of internet meme fame by pure coincidence while watching cartoons recorded off TV sometime in the 90s or 2000s... That was the hardest I've ever laughed.
